Wise words by lights:

"It’s neat when life subtly presents you with tips on how to live it. I think these hints are bursting around us and flaying out from under our feet all the time. It’s just a matter of noticing and deciphering them. Today I noticed one of them.

I was on the chairlift with my [rad] parents watching a snow-decked, very ambitious dude tackle a neck-breakingly steep hill acne’d with moguls (yes, I turned acne into a verb and breaking into an adverb…let’s call it creative license). He was cruising with grace in and around the big lumps of snow. I said to my dad, “man, you gotta think fast to do that,” and he said “yup, you gotta always watch the ground in front of you while maintaining focus on what’s ahead.” He was half joking-half serious but it suddenly made so much sense.

At once I noticed the little flush of cockiness that had been increasingly consuming me over the course of the day as a result of not having wiped hard (yet) all season. A solid bail can take a lot out of you, some of which can include oxygen, blood, spit, skin, bits of your board, and most importantly, confidence. But there I sat, confidence [and body] intact, wondering what I’d done differently this time around.

I’ve learned a lot since last snowboarding season. This year has brought me bouts of both success and disappointment , friendships and lack there-of, on tour and off tour, love and loss, plans and disarray, ambition and procrastination. Like every year, I’ve learned that much more about a suitable way to tackle my life. One particular thing I learned over the course of 2010 is that life is not going to run away on you. I have spent so much of my time looking ahead, aiming and shooting and racing and running and not enough time on the obstacles right in front of me. At the end of the day, those are what will knock you over and stop you from getting to those extraordinary things in the distance.

Somewhere along the way I stored that little tidbit of wisdom in my mind and started applying it to everything, even snowboarding. I’ve been eating-shit less because I am not constantly plotting how I am going to hit that jump way up there, or what part of the lift-line I’m going to glide into, or how fast I can zip cruelly by that 9-year old beginner skier like I used to. I am watching the ground in front of me, thinking quickly but carefully while still maintaining that focus on what’s up ahead (Dr. Leo Marvin would call it “Baby Steps”). It’s kind of a perfect balance, one that I’m still perfecting. One that will make life a lot easier I think. Not just on the sides of mountains.

I guess long story short: if you know your ambitions, can envision what you want and remember that every step and obstacle, small or great, quick or long-lasting, is going to lead you there, you’re already on your way. And with a lot less eating of shit."

2011 here we come.

- Lights.

ZEBRA & GIRAFFE

Zebra & Giraffe new album The inside out now:

SOMEONE'S DAUGHTER

Someones daughter was written by my best friends mother, Aurette Bowes. Its a sad, yet heart warming story about her real-life closed adoption. The story follows her struggle to cope with the truth of adoption as well all the good and bad that come with such circumstances. Someones Daughter is a story told a wonderful author that is definitely worth reading.
It can be purchased at:

CITY AND COLOUR

City and colour, the alias of Alexisonfire's vocalist and guitarist Dallas Green. Dallas Green is a Jun0-Awarding winning Canadian singer-songwriter and musician and he formed city and colour in 2004. The alias city and colour is derived from the singers name Dallas green, Dallas being a city and Green a colour. He has currently released 2 studio albums and 3 EPs. Greens undeniable piercing a soulful voice along with brilliant acoustic guitar makes City and Colour absolutely addictive. Most of the songs a really chill and you become swept up as Green pours his heart and soul into each and every song. City and colour is one of my favourite bands and I hope to see a lot more from him.

DANS DANS LISA

I've decided to post about a local South African band. Dans Dans Lisa is a two-piece band consisting of Bouwer Bosch (Straatligkinders) and Deon Meiring (Glaskas). Now I may not the biggest fan of Afrikaans music but Dans Dasn Lisa is really good, they have easy-listening, fun lyrics with a great acoustic sound. they have currently only released three singles, " My eks(kuus), "Die mense hier" and "sing in skaamte". So if your into chill-poppy acoustic stuff give Dans Dans Lisa a listen.

PICTURES OF YOU

I've been looking so long at these pictures of you that I almost believe that they're real I've been living so long with my pictures of you that I almost believe that the pictures are all I can feel. Remembering you standing quiet in the rain as I ran to your heart to be near and we kissed as the sky fell in holding you close how I always held close in your fear.... remembering you running soft through the night you were bigger and brighter than the snow and screamed at the make-believe screamed at the sky and you finally found all your courage to let it all go..........

"You know I've got this theory, there are two kinds of people in the world. There are lyric people and music people. You know, the lyrics people tend to be analytical. You know, all about the meaning of the song. They're the ones you see with the CD insert out like 5 minutes after buying it, pouring over the lyrics, interpreting the hell out of everything. Um, then there’s the music people. Who could care less for the lyrics as long as its just got like a good beat and you could dance to it. I don’t know, sometimes it might be easier to be a music girl and not a lyric girl. But since I’m not, let me just say this. Sometimes things find you when you need them to find you, I believe that. And for me its usually song lyrics. " Peyton Sawyer

GO RADIO

In 2007, after Jason Lancaster left the band Mayday Parade and Together with Matt Burns, as well as Steven Kopacz and Patrick Hosey of the Florida band Don't Die Cindy, Go Radio was formed. They have a pop- rock, alternative rock sound and Lancaster's voice makes provision for great easy listen tracks. Currently they have released two EP's ( 'Welcome to life' and 'Do overs and Second chances'). Go radio is definitely a band to watch.

Joe brooks

I recently discovered this very talented artist. His name is Joe brooks and he hails from South Hampton,UK. His voice is pure and beautiful and he produces really chill music with lyrics that almost compel you to sing along. As of yet he has only released two EP's (maybe tomorrow & acoustic sessions EP) but has recently signed with lava records and his highly anticipated debut album is expected in the summer of 2010.

Brooks obtained great success over Myspace, currently his songs receive up to 30,000 plays a day and he is constantly the number one artist on Myspace music. His last song, "Superman", has had more plays than Oasis' last single. I cant wait to hear more from Joe brooks he is definitely one to watch. Try and download these songs:

  • superman
  • marching bands

  • for you (acoustic)

  • voices

He has one of the most interesting myspace pages i've seen in ages, check it out!

Eclipse soundtrack

As always the twilight saga soundtracks never fail to deliver the perfect mix of songs. The latest soundtrack for the upcoming movie Eclipse is brilliant, with artists like Muse, The bravery, Florence + the machine, Vampire weekend and more. I have not yet seen the movie so I cannot judge whether or not the songs fit each scene but songs like heavy in your arms, eclipse(all yours) and ours, truly work to show the love between Edward and Bella . As a huge twilight fan I love anything associated with the books but as a music lover I really enjoyed this album. The soundtrack is full artists that produce really good music especially if your into indie-folk-Alternative kinda thing.

This is good mix of artists and genres and gives the feeling that you just want to put this on full blast in your car and go on a road trip. A definite must have.

BEST SONG: heavy in your arms by Florence + the machine

WORST SONG: let's get lost by Beck and Bat for lashes
GET IT!

Punk Goes Classic Rock

The guys from Fearless records have been keeping us entertained with their 'punk goes...' compilations since 2000. Their latest offering is Punk goes classic rock where various artists cover, well, classic rock songs. This album offers songs from artists such as Bless the fall, Mayday parade, Nevershoutnever!, Pierce the veil, I see stars, The Maine and many more covering classic like Queen's Bohemian rhapsody and Aero smith's Dream on.

Ranging from post-hardcore, pop rock, punk rock, acoustic pop bands PGCR is a fun mix for all those who love both old school rock and the new kids on the block. Now if your a die hard rock and roll fan this album could be seen as a disgrace to you as all the bands give a fair attempt at reworking these classic but a cover hardly ever out does the original.

best song: Bless the fall - Dream on (Aero Smith)

worst: forever the sickest kids- Crazy train (ozzy osborne)
